I suppose this thread will debate the merits of a universal childcare program, but could we stop for 1 moment to question the method of implementation?

It seems to me like the Liberals want to take money away from children, and place it into the hands of bureaucrats before the bureaucrats have proven themselves.

Why won't the Liberals leave the existing funding in place?

Doesn't this stink of smugness to think that they can build such a big program without any flaws in it?

I don't understand why we would want to create a new group of civil servants. Everybody paying for a service used by a few sounds more like NDP than Liberal policy, this wont help the Liberals to take the support they need from the CPC or the NDP.

This has been an on-going joke ever since Chretien?.. Trudeau? dreamed it up.

One question though..
$1:
The last Liberal government, under Paul Martin, had earmarked $5 billion over five years for child care.

So where did that money go?

Now we get the hear the bleating about how people have a fundamental right to force other people to pay to support their families.

The provinces are not going to allow the feds to muck around directly with day care so that will add to the bureaucracy and cost. And in the interests of "good relations" Iggy would handle the money over to Quebec with no strings attached.

We already do that through baby bonus cheques and various tax deductions.

I saw this coming. After attacking the CPC over any little thing wasn't working, (instead of waiting for a real scandal -- stay tuned. it's coming), it becomes time to start making noises about a potential platform to be elected on.

I dont see it as a right to take, but a priviledge to be in a country that supports. I am quite proud to call myself Canadian.

Edit: historically, this is a value held by all canadian parties, we just differ on method

Do you recall me making the point to you that every tax payer should have a little checklist on their tax return where they could tick off where they wanted their tax money to go?

I think that would be an excellent idea and it would really tell us what the public supports and what it doesn't.

Please, please, Don't do that. I live in Quebec. I know what it is ! People now have to put their *kids* on a waiting list 2 years before procreation.

If you can't afford them, don't have them. Pay for your own damn kids.
