Oh boy, what a mess.

In Italy, the first conviction (1A) automatically triggers the second trial as an appeal.

Think of it more as grand jury indictment and then trial, for the Law and Order types.

Second trial (2A) was first registered as acquittal, but was overturned by the Supreme Court.

Trial (2B), is what just finished, guilty again.

There is no double jeopardy, as (2A) was declared invalid.

Whether or not Knox will be extradited is an open question.

This whole trial is a circus, but not 'incompetent'.

My guess is the Italians won't think of asking for extradition until the final appeal to the Supreme Court is finished.

Italy also has two sailors on trial in India, they have to be careful with getting too pushy for extradition.

If the US fights the extradition too hard, they can forget about ever getting Snowden back, or lots of other people they want.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/j ... manda-knox

$1:
Raffaele Sollecito, Amanda Knox's Italian former boyfriend, has been detained by police close to Italy's border with Austria, according to reports in the Italian media this morning.

Sollecito faces a 25-year prison sentence after an appeals court in Florence upheld the convictions for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher. Knox was sentenced to 28 and a half years for the murder.

The Ansa news agency said Sollecito, 29, had been located by police officers in a village between Udine and the town of Tarvisio, which is about three miles from the Austrian border. He had reportedly arrived in the village early on Thursday afternoon.

Waaayyyyy too late, buddy.

Having said that, he doesn't need a passport to get around in the EU.
But he wouldn't last long.
Maybe Kiev can use an extra protester.

Fuck me, I have to drive right by that tomorrow.

What a joke. Makes the Trayvon circle jerk in Florida or the OJ trial look sensible in comparison.

Seems to be two different trains of thought on this. Some say the State Department wouldn't extradite Knox due to her media darling status and the fact that the Italian legal proceedings have been so convoluted and drawn out. Others say the US will abide by their extradition treaty no questions asked and Knox's goose is cooked.

Either way she should be working on her exit strategy.

Apparently the Italians don't have an equivalent to malicious prosecution the way the Yanks do. This is BS being driven by that yellow press they have over their, especially by the British side who are scalp hunting for Knox just because the murdered girl was from England. The State Department better stand firm on this because it's be a travesty to send her over to be imprisoned again by an Italian system that's about the same kind of corrupt and inept mess that they have in Afghanistan. Shit, I'm about the biggest law and order fascist here and even I think the Italian prosecution is a total crock.
