Time immemorial.....wars can usually be broken down into two parts - brief intense engagements/battles, lasting hours or days followed by long periods of 'inactivity', lasting weeks or months.

I've heard several veterans describe war as "long periods of complete boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror".
