It's hard enough to keep a cougar on a leash, let alone a jaguar.

Sickening waste of a beautiful creature. Must be today's refresher on how stupid and sickening humans can be.

Just one more indicator that the Brazilian Olympics are going to be a huge bust.

I love the Olympics, but for some reason I've lost interest this time around.

stratos stratos:

Same thing I was thinking. There's been one issue after another and I'm sure there will be even more once the games get started, if some of the events even happen at all.

Very sad that such a beautiful creature was even used this way.

Must've been an American cop working in Brazil. It was an honest mistake, he saw it was on a leash and mistook it for a Golden Retriever.

If you treat animals with love, they're not dangerous. This story says the jaguar attacked *AFTER* it was shot 4 times. Duh! Here is a video of a jaguar being a jaguar.

If you treat wild animals with love, they're still wild animals. Unpredictable, pretty much by definition.

This is the kind of thing that happens when we treat them like they're domesticated. Even dogs, the most domesticated animal on earth, will behave unpredictably once in a while.

Which is why ideally they should be simply respected, from a reasonable distance and in their own natural environment.

The jaguar was shot 4 times with tranquilizer darts. Only then did it attack a veterinarian. It wasn't in it's cage, but was contained in the zoo. Of course it's going to get aggressive *AFTER* it's shot.

Perhaps an over-generalization. Handlers of big cats create a relationship with the animals. And one key to respect from a cat is to feed it. Once that relationship is established, big cats are just cats. Killing that gorilla was not justified, the gorilla treated the child as a young gorilla and protected him as best it knew how. The cat was mistreated, reacting to how it was treated. The fault is the handlers. News states they already shot the jaguar with 4 tranquilizer darts, and there was no danger of it leaving zoo grounds. The correct response is just to leave the animal unmolested and contained until the tranquilizer takes effect.

Ps. The animal in this news report was not a wild animal. It was born in captivity and lived its whole life in a zoo.
