It's just a shame these women were put in the middle of this debate between Iran's federation and FIFA and set up for disappointment.

Bullshit. The Iranians knew exactly what they were doing, and CHOSE this path.

Fuck 'em.

Since Iran refused to comply with these rules and didn't use the specially designed caps that its 2010 Youth Olympics team wore,

There ya go. There is a solution for Muslim women. That Iran doesn't want to use that solution is too bad, but it will cost you your game.

Sounds like Iran was playing politics and got burned.

I feel sorry for the athletes, but the only group to blame is Iran. After all, the Jordanian team wasn't penalized for wearing illegal head gear...

How the hell do you play soccer in the Muslim version of a hoody anyway? Their brains must bake playing soccer in hot climates.

FIFA is intolerant of the religious rights of Muslims.

Good.

They've become inured to it. If some women can walk around in a black tent in 50 deg heat, they've obviously toughened up to it. I've never been over there, but I always wonder if they have extra strong deodorant there, or just walk around stinking.

The religious police actually feel up the women to see if they're wearing a bra and, if so, they get a beating right on the spot. They're also not supposed to wear fragrances but, so far, deodorant seems to be accepted.

As to the black bags the women wear it is not at all unusual to see women in the public markets collapsing from heat stroke.

Don't see what the hoopla is all about ? If they want to play internationaly then you have to follow the guidelines.

Bart seriosuly ??? Just because many arn't informed on a subject does not mean you can make up anyshit you like and pass it off as fact.

And for Andy.

You'd be surprised, those things are actually the best way to keep cool and protect you from the sun in that kind of temp and sun. Although black is not a very good choice of colour for the purpose.

Having worked out here in the desert for a very long time where temp easily cross 50+ C Have tried everything from caps to what not, but the best thing I found to keep cool is the traditional arab head dress, Just drape it over your head and your entire head, neck and shoulders are protected and stay cool and even if there is a slight wind the effects are doubled. At first I was hesitant to use it, but once I tried it now I never go out to the dunes without one. Plus if it ever a ssand storm breaks out, you just wrap it up and you have excellent protection.

I believe many forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are now issued similar cloths, although most pics I've seen is most of them have it wrapped around their necks.

Seriously. The religious police in Iran (and, to a lesser extent, Saudi Arabia and some other Sunni states) have been reported as feeling up women to see if they're wearing a bra because a bra, in the opinion of some of the whackjobs, is a form of deception. Not saying it is common, even in Iran, just saying that these whackjob vermin do it.

As to the women passing out in the market place, that's something I saw personally. Frankly, I can understand because I was in battle dress and suffering like heck at the time, myself. Even in our LAV on a few days the a/c could only get the inside temp down to maybe 40C...which was still better than 52C outside.

Let's see! We have a game where physical injuries to all parts of the body are pretty much guaranteed to get fractures and injuries and they say the reason for the ban was because of possible choking injuries. I call foul on their reasoning. If they were really concerned they'd ban the game itself. Twits!

There's an old saying, "When in Rome, do what the Romans do."

For a Western woman that means when you're in Iran it may behoove you to wear the local garb because those intolerant assh0les will impose their troglodytic standards on everyone with no concern for the fact that not everyone is a fundamentalist Shiite.

But then the Iranians want it both ways. They want to wear their idiotic outifts in the West, too.

Too effin' bad!

It's nice to see someone stand up to that idiocy and to tell those autocratic thugs that they can't always have their way.

It reminds me of Walt Disney refusing to let Nikita Kruschev have a tour of Disneyland just to make the point to that dictator that the whole world didn't answer to him or his band of thugs.

This is no different.

I'm not sure that FIFA does'nt have more history than Iran. Sports are played for the love of the game not for some sports organization and it's dumb, prejudicial rulings. IMO

They can still play soccer. Just not in a FIFA-organized setting. Unless they submit to FIFA rules.
