Interesting how the Government claims to support reconciliation, but fights so hard to treat first nations people as equal.

Pretty on brand given our history of treating First Nations people.

The Liberals never seem to realize that their obsession with who qualifies for this or who doesn't qualify for that greatly damages whatever program they develop. It's this sort of over-zealous regulation and obsessive dotting of the i's & crossings of the t's that give far too much ammunition to the anti-government types who wouldn't do anything to help or recompense those who both need and deserve it.

Not to mention it also harms the efforts of actually creating goodwill between Native peoples and the rest of Canada. Somebody like Cindy Blackstock (and I'm not faulting her or anybody else for this, it's just good sense) can easily get public opinion on their side by pointing out how the government keeps ignoring the tribunal rulings.

Small wonder a lot of Native commentators see Trudeau's commitment to Native rights and restitution as just lip service.

With the hoops that had to be jumped through for CERB and the other relief benefits during COVID, that only some were eligible for when every Canadian adult regardless of their employment status should have been able to receive it, we can all get a better idea of what it is exactly the Natives have to endure to receive assistance that they need. It wipes out entirely whatever good the Liberals attempt to accomplish when they make the bureaucratic experience of receiving help so bloody horrible for any Canadian who applies for it to go through. When so many things can be recompensed by the government simply by making them taxable it's not like they don't get anything back. And it would be outright superior and far more encouraging for an applicant to have to pay some income tax on more benefits than to either be rejected outright or told after-the-fact that they have to pay back anything they received in full just because their file got reviewed by CRA and their personal situation didn't check off every silly little box of approval criteria.
