Give them a break, by sending women to the olympics I think they just hit the 20th Century... give them some time to catch up!

$1:
...her father, Ali, reportedly told a Saudi newspaper on Monday that he will not allow his daughter to compete if she is forced to remove her hijab.

Wonder what her mother would say, IF she could talk freely?

Maybe she won't have this problem at the Muslim Olympics.

It's to be worn only in the presence of non-related men...

...so I guess she could remove it and compete, if we removed all the men from inside the stadium, including the stands, and if the competition was not filmed and broadcasted.

Let's start by getting them to join the 20th century first, then we'll try for the 21st after that.

Apparently the issue has been resolved by the IOC....

$1:
An International Olympic Committee spokesman said: "The judo federation will allow her to wear something which will not compromise her safety, which I think they use for competitions in Asia."

Good! 'cause if they stopped this girl from playing I would have thrown a fit. This is sport and not the military. [B-o]

Maybe the USA should also then.

dd, I think the difference is the American chooses to wear the hijab whereas the Saudi is forced to wear it, whether she wants to or not.....

$1:
the kingdom has insisted she wear the hijab while competing, which may scuttle her Olympic career before it even begins.

Another case where the IOC has to make concessions for athletes whose countries insist on their adhering to a 7th century religion!

To my knowledge, it's not Islam that requires women to wear headcovering. It's a tribal thing.

It IS a major improvement, and the first thing I noticed when I was watching the opening ceremony. I also saw someone (a woman) from I think Saudi Arabia participating in the ceremony WITHOUT hijab.

The beach volleyball women have to wear shirts and are not allowed to wear only bikini's.

In gymnastics, only the top 2 of a country go to the finals, NOT the 24 best overall.

There are many stupid rules.

Note to self...

Never go out with a woman trained in handling pointy objects. 8O

The Hijab and Niqab are not specified in the Quran. The relevant Suras just basically say that women are to dress modestly. It’s a common misconception used by religious zealots to justify oppressive and discriminatory rules. Similar to Pakistani chums of mine back in the UK who wouldn’t drink alcohol but were right at it when it came to smoking weed. They couldn’t see the link or maybe they just didn’t want to. The Quran forbids intoxicants and specifically mentions wine as the demon’s brew but each to his (or her’s) version of what the Arabic text actually means.

That said, we Western types used the bible to justify all kinds of mainstream nasty stuff. We just stopped doing it as government policy a few decades ago.
