I read about this yesterday and I think it's horrible that this ludicrous amount of food has to be destroyed.

Donate them to shelters and the homeless. They don't have to be destroyed, except no one thinks about helping others because IT'S ALL ABOUT DA MONAY! :|

Cost less to dump them, they did the same thing with milk a while back in Québec.

Just the cost of doing business, nothing to see here.

Truckloads of P.E.I. potatoes arriving at food banks across Canada

They tried, but there are too many potatoes.

I'm barely getting by right now, and would love free potatoes. I can do a lot with potatoes, and would welcome them.

Perhaps it's just a Hobbit?

"Po-TA-toes! Boil 'em, mash 'em, stick 'em in a stew... Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish."

It's funny that I have never seen potatoes specifically labelled as from PEI in grocery stores around here. The bulk russets are sometimes indicated as "product of USA". I'm guessing because it's easier to get ones from California (I'm assuming) to here rather than from PEI. I just googled it and it seems Fresh Street Market stores in the lower mainland carry them but there isn't one of those stores in my area. The bagged nugget potatoes we buy are labelled as a product of Canada distributed from Mississauga but the package does not specify where in Canada the potatoes are from.

So if you eat chips or frozen potato products, chances are you're having PEI potatoes.
$1:
Approximately 60% of potatoes grown in Prince Edward Island are processed into products such as French fries or potato chips. Major companies involved in contracting potatoes for processing in PEI include Cavendish Farms, McCain Foods, Frito-Lay, and Old Dutch potato chips.

Another 30% of Prince Edward Island Potatoes are destined for fresh markets (also known as tablestock). Fresh potatoes from PEI are marketed in all provinces of Canada, the Eastern Seaboard of the United States, as well as a number of export markets (notably countries and dependencies in the Caribbean. Prince Edward Island's proximity to large population centers in Eastern North America as well as its access to container shipment through Halifax, Nova Scotia and Saint John, New Brunswick assist in getting product to market in a cost-effective manner.

The final 10% of Prince Edward Island's potato harvest is grown for seed production, to produce the next year's potato crop. The majority of seed grown in PEI is utilized within the province, but seed potatoes have been exported to the United States and a number of other countries for many years. The Prince Edward Island Potato Board operates an Elite Seed Farm to multiple early generation seed for the benefit of Island potato growers.

I'm not at food bank status yet. There are people worse off then me than need them first and foremost. I might be struggling, but there are people that have a lot less. I will never take food away from people that truly need/deserve it.

Thanks raydan.

We do sometimes buy Cavendish hash brown patties, McCain fries and potato chips. :D

The Cavendish patties are the perfect base for poached eggs to perch on rather than using muffins. [drool]

I like the Cavendish patties, now I'm going to have to try them with poached eggs. I have an egg poacher that's been in the family for 60 years.

I meant drive to PEI and load up.

Transportation isn't free. Destruction is cheaper than transport.
