This is just another piece of misfortune which has followed the Canucks since the very start of their joining the NHL back in 1970. The Canucks joined the league in 1970 as an expansion team along with the Buffalo Sabres. It all started there with the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. The consensus was that first pick in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft would be junior phenomenon Gilbert Perreault. Either the Sabres or the Canucks would get the first pick, to be determined with the spin of a roulette wheel. Perreault was available to the Sabres and Canucks. The Canucks were allocated numbers 1–10 on the wheel, while the Sabres had 11–20. When league president Clarence Campbell spun the wheel, he initially thought the pointer landed on 1. While Campbell was congratulating the Vancouver delegation, Imlach asked Campbell to check again. As it turned out, the pointer was on 11—effectively handing Perreault to the Sabres.

So the Canucks ended up with Dale Tallon while the Sabres got Gilbert Perreault, all one has to do is examine the careers of Tallon and Perreault with their respective teams to see how that went....

Nah, because your early-round draft picks included Trevor Linden and the Sedins. What kills you guys is your trades. If you have a curse it was self-inflicted from the day they traded Cam Neely to Boston. Giving away Neely vies with Calgary sending Doug Gilmour to Toronto for Gary Leeman as the single worst trade in NHL history.

Oh well. What matters now is that they use that 5th pick to select THE player for the Canuck's future. It could work out just fine.
