Go on Google Earth and you'll see they restore the strip-mined areas after they get done. It's only a very narrow band of earth that's opened up for the mine at any one time.

If you halt nuclear power, and you don't have hydro available, you're pretty much forced to hydrocarbon. I don't imagine the emissions from tjhis--or the oil sands for that matter--will amount to a drop in a bucket compared to the increase in emissions from China and India.
