I'm confused. I thought Best Buy shut down and Futureshop was dominating. certainly what seemed to have happend out here.

Also, I thought Best Buy was an american company.

Maybe if they would have actually done their jobs, they would still have jobs. What a useless sales team, about the same as Best Buy.

BestBuy is an American company. They purchased Futureshop in 2001 before they opened their first location in Canada. They continued to operate Futureshop as it was, giving the appearance of being in competition with each other.

Oh, article says company is based in Burnaby, BC. But as I say, around here they closed a bunch of Best Buys, left open the Future Shops. I preferred the Best Buy - they seemed less pushy.

It seems strange that an electronic retailer is struggling, what with people so obsessed with having the latest gew gaws.

They bought Future Shop in 2001, but most people do the opposite andyt - go to Future Shop, not Best Buy. It's the familiar Canadian store, and I've been a loyal customer since they began over 30 years ago.
Whereas I have bought literally DOZENS of computers (since my first Vic20), TVs, stereo equipment and electronic gadgets, I've made ONE purchase at Best Buy in Abbotsford. And that was because the salesman beat the price on a Macbook that Future Shop had - a stupid move from a company that competes with its own store in the very next mall....
I also use Future Shop's online service a fair bit. It's a two hour drive to the one in Prince George and I certainly hope that one is not slated for permanent closure.

This is a DUMB MOVE. Duplicate of closing Zellers and replacing it with Target, same shit inside and no advantages to consumers.
I will be probably be shopping elsewhere now.

Since they've actually owned the chain for years, this seems it's just closing a pile of stores. Then changing the signs on the ones left open. All sales agreements are still valid as well.

I've been in a Best Buy store only once, but I've shopped online with them lots. Less than 48 hours shipping from the lower mainland compared to around 10 days if the same thing is shipped from Ontario.

I bought one computer from Future Shop, and wasn't happy with it, all the extras they wanted to sell me and the fact you have to drive a ways to get service. I've mostly bought from London Drugs, and been very happy with sales and service. And they are everywhere. I don't care if I pay a little more for that.

Other electronics, I've just never connected with Future shop staff - they probably work on commission. Best Buy, I only ever bought one TV, but was very happy with how they sold me a good deal without trying to push more on me than I wanted, didn't push the extended warranty very hard, and so on.

This is not the same as Target taking over Zellers. It only makes sense to only have one brand. This is equivalent of GM dropping Pontiac and Olds.

What I don't understand is why these stores are struggling? Are people mostly buying online now?

From the article:

Two years ago, Best Buy spoke of how it had to adapt to a "changing retail landscape" where online stores were winning a greater share of the electronics market as it closed eight Future Shop and seven Best Buy big box stores across the country.

Go out to Abbotsford, where I usually am when I go down there. The Future Shop has customers but the Best Buy in the next mall is almost empty.
And I think Future Shop copied a lot of London Drugs setup when the Iranian brothers first opened it. Used to go down to their first store at Broadway & Cambie, I think London Drugs was the next block down years ago. Very familiar and friendly layout and selection from day one. Pesky sales people, yes. Never listen to the idiots anyways. especially on computers. Sorry but most customers are mostly clueless too. "What's the best BRAND of PC?" (Future Shop kid actually snorted and stepped away to laugh when a customer asked that and I stuck my head in an told him the Macintoshes in the next aisle)

I also used to love the Future Shop here because they'd have ridiculously low loss leaders. I'd find a printer for $47 that was $72 from the wholesaler and buy ALL the location was allotted on the first day of the sale. Then I'd drive them back to my store for $89-$99.
Andy you also made mistake #1, the biggest pissoff in my career. The guy that sold it to you or the store that sold it didn't make your item. The company that built it did. It's 100% their fault if it fucked up. That's why when I had my store, I only built my own systems. Up to 30% of brand names were no good out of the box by the time they'd been booted and tossed all the way to Prince George.(You saw that Purolator video from the airport, eh? I actually had large screen LCD monitors they tried to drop off with holes clean through both sides of the box - like a pipe was shoved through it)

They did this before, about three or four years ago. I can't say that I'm surprised. Their biggest competitors around here are their sister Best Buy operations.
We have another chain around here that's closing their retail stores as round here right now, which is Tiger Direct. I'm really going to miss them as there is no equivalent around that sells tech bits in such a consumer friendly environment.

Try ncix.com
Always was pissed how TigerDirect had higher prices in Canada, even when the dollar was on par.
I find online good for parts. I'm not going to order a computer/laptop without actually putting my hands on it first. Call me old fashioned but I won't buy a car without test driving it either. Sat in too many cars I wished for and found my head rubs on the roof or the seat won't go far enough back... held too many laptops that were just too flimsy for me to consider
