As was pointed out it is illegal to lie about someone, its called libel. This is a condition to a license to broadcast in canada. They can revoke the license for broadcasting lies deliberately as news.

Interesting, since Canada used to have a law against spreading false news, but that law was struck down by the Supreme Court in the Ernst Zundel case.

You'd think people would know bullshit when they hear it without a law, but judging by the way people in the USA react to the nonsense spewed on FOX, maybe we'd be wise to nip this in the bud.

Well, in the USA at least, libel means a lie has been told and it must be proven that the lie was told with malice and that the lie caused measurable harm. If all of those occur, I would consider it a crime, but the lie alone wouldn't suffice.
