Coyotes have been an issue in the Halifax region for some time now, really every since a woman out hiking was killed by one. Now anytime someone see a coyote people freak out and its all over the news.

My first close encounter with a coyote happened when I moved to Winnipeg to go to UofM. I took a load of trash out to the dumpster and heard a scratching sound coming from inside. I opened up the top of the dumpster and a coyote came out of there in a flash, right over my shoulder. Scared the piss out of me and I think the yote was a few pounds lighter too.

On the upside of things it appears that no one needs a permit to hunt coyotes in Nova Scotia - which is proper given that they're not a native species.

why is this news??

It'll be important news for people who live there. It's like when we get cougar or grizzly attacks in the west, it becomes news for those who live here.

The eastern coyotes are hybrids with wolf DNA and exhibiting wolf behaviours including pack behaviours, many of them are as big and aggressive as wolves and can do the same damage a wolf can do. Nova Scotia has been having problems with them encroaching aggressively in human inhabited areas and attacking people and livestock.

Meh! I've lived in environments with bears, cougars, timber wolves and coyotes and I've never been bothered by them. I've got friends on the West Coast(Abbotsford) who have coyote packs going through their back yards nightly....hell I even drive surrounded by Chinese....and they don't get much more aggressive and predatory than Asians behind the wheel.
