$1:
In order for this proposed new stat day to be recognized nationwide, each province and territory would have to change their laws.

I can see this happening actually. No Provincial or Territorial Government will want to be the one to say no.

$1:
Pam Palmater, chair of Indigenous governance at Ryerson University, said there are still major issues facing First Nations communities today, including a housing crisis, years-long boil water advisories and high rates of Indigenous people in Canadian prisons and foster care. She said many of those problems have roots in the residential school system.

Creating a new stat holiday, Palmater said, is “just one of many things that should be done.”

I'm uncertain as to what creating a stat will do to improve the problems mentioned.

It is part of the grand delay tactic. With enough time, all of the people with memories will be dead and the problem will gradually disappear.
There is nothing new under the sun.

I think there's talk that, along with the stat day, there will be a monument or something like that and an education campaign as well.

The virtue signalers should make this holiday Native only because it costs Canadians alot of money to comply with any new statutory holidays.

$1:
In BC when the Lib's introduced Family Day they estimate it cost 42 million for small businesses to comply and when you add the large businesses it comes to alot more.

Adding another statutory holiday is not only unnecessary, but also costly.

Businesses that close on Family Day lose a full production day but their annual wage bill remains the same, since workers given the day off must be paid an average day’s pay. With lower revenues and no offsetting reduction in costs, owners, consumers, and employees end up footing the bill.

Consumers will pay if the costs are passed along in the form of higher prices. This, however, is increasingly unlikely, given competitive markets for most goods and services.

Employees bear the burden if the businesses invest less in machinery, equipment, and new technologies that make workers more productive or offer lower wage increases in the future.

Then there are business owners who will be burdened by the new statutory holiday in addition to the recession and slow growing economy, the HST/PST fiasco, and significantly higher minimum wages the Clark government recently imposed. For small and medium businesses, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) estimates that BC Family Day will cost $42 million. Add large businesses and the costs increase significantly.

And yet, the Fed's refuse to make Remembrance Day a national holiday?

A stat holiday is dumb. Victoria Day is a stat holiday how many people spend that day off solemnly reflecting on her reign vs drinking beer and going on family getaways?

If you really want people to take it seriously make it like Remembrance Day (in most provinces) and NOT a day iff but rather a day of reflection

Jeez you must be from the Center of the Universe. Remembrance Day is a stat almost everywhere. If you have to work it even the most menial jobs get overtime or another day in lieu of.

You imply that they are not one in the same. That's pretty much what we do for birthday parties for friends now, drink beer and have a fire in the firepit.

Same with Remembrance day. 2 hours of ceremony, followed by 12 - 18 hours of drinking with service members to honour the fallen.

I reflect on her majesty's reign whilst drinking to her health.
