"He offered no explanation for the crime, but said his family found it difficult adjusting to life in Canada."
There you go Canada. It's your fault.

The son was fine and healthy but the twin girls were beaten and starved. The guilty man came from Algeria to Canada. Nothing more needs to be said.

We've had very similar cases with caregivers (parents or otherwise) who were born and bred in this country. Where one child was abused while others weren't. It's got nothing to do with being an immigrant from Algeria. That also needs to be said.

Cases like this is why we have calls for mandatory minimum sentences. The Crown has a responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members, like these children. Its one kind of messed up when someone can execute someone they have never met before, like what happened in Moncton. It is a higher level of perversion when someone can sit back and watch their own flesh and blood wither away and die a horrible death. Neither of these twisted individuals should ever see the light of day again. Life without the possibility of parole would have been the proper sentence.

He pled guilty to manslaughter, that's how the system works. His wife will go on trial charged with second degree. Are we really going to eliminate judges who hear all the facts of the case and just have a computer spit out the mandatory sentence?
I hope you vote for a tax increase, because with all those people you would sentence to life without possibility of parole, we would need to build a lot more prisons.
Do you really think if your system had been in play, this guy would have sat back and said to himself "hmmm, 15 years I could handle, it's worth it to starve my kids, but now that I face life in prison, I guess I'd better give them some food"?
You may want to take a peek down south, where these sorts of stiff mandatory sentences have not worked, cost the system a fortune and even has the right calling for change.
But I know, your need for revenge would be satisfied. That's not really the primary mandate of our prison system.
What does need to happen, is that if this guy isn't a citizen, he should be deported when he gets out.

If he isn't a citizen, he should be deported now. Why should we pay for, and FEED, that sick prick?

wildrosegirl wildrosegirl: If he isn't a citizen, he should be deported now. Why should we pay for, and FEED, that sick prick? No, he should have to serve his time like anybody else. If he had fled back home before being sentenced, would you not support asking he be extradited here to face the court? If he was a US citizen, would you be as eager to just send him home with no jail time? He may live a normal life back home - he should have to pay his dues first.

If that were possible, I'd be all for it. Doubt we have that sort of arrangement with Algeria. And if he has any connections there, he'd walk out a free man as soon as he set foot on their soil. We've seen that before. I'm fine with how things stand, as long as the govt of the day is diligent in having him removed when he gets out. As in he goes from jail directly to an immigration jail cell while the deportation process proceeds.

$1: “[He] has lost his children, his marriage and his prospect of a new life in Canada, but this was by his own hand and he must pay a steep price,” Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sheila Greckol said Wednesday. In cases like this, I can't help but wish the price was steeper - he should stay in prison for life, as should his wife. This says it all; $1: “These are crimes of inhumanity against small children.”
