The story says it's to cover the cost of a medical examiner who must review every death. True they label it a tax, which we have lots of, and true it's technically no longer healthcare once they die, but it's the same idea. Here in Canada (or at least here in BC) that kind of thing is still covered. Ministry of Health Services hands the matter over to Ministry of Public Safety which oversees the BC Coroner's Office. There's no bill for a grieving family except for the private arrangements (funeral etc.) I'm not against people having to pay for the services they use but this is pushing it.

It's a County tax. Residents of the County pay it.

In BC, the payment is hidden in the General Taxes paid, but it is still paid.

Nothing in BC is free. That was made so much worse over the last few years with Gordon Campbell.

I take it you're not for socialized healthcare or coroner services. I am, but fair enough. A lot of people aren't, and with Canada's mounting debt, it's hard to blame them.

Of course it's not free. It's basically government-run insurance. We pay for it dearly as a country through taxes and premiums but when something bad happens to us as individuals, ie., baby dies in hospital, we don't have to pay extra.

The govt is always eager to get into your pockets and take your money, but imagine if you are the parents. You are very upset (to say the least) and you get a bill like this that is going to emotionally going to sting even more.

That's very nice of them. It's always hard not to let it pull your heartstrings when it involves a baby.
