Yup,the 15 SAR/Utility versions of the cancelled of the total 43 ordered EH101's would be quite useful in Afghanistan right about now.
15 hot-hi choppers that can carry a decent payload would have more than replaced the 7 Chinooks sold off.

Libs in glass houses should throw stones about helicopters Boots.

Mulroney didn't sell the Chinooks. Muloney came to the Forces and told the brass that costs needed to be cut, and they had to sacrifice a platform. The CF chose to give up the Chinook.

Now I think Mulroney was wrong for shortchanging the CF (I won't support that no matter who is in power) but it wasn't his call on what was sacrificed to save costs.

Canceling the EH101 is 1 Election promise I wished Chretien would have broke. He chose the GST instead.

That said, we needed to get the Deficit eliminated. Which was largely what motivated Mulroney to start the inevitable(retrospectively) ball rolling in the first place.

Come on Saturn, he rubber stamped it. Mulroney did nothing for the CF, he was just passive, bordering on negligent, Chretien on the other hand took an active role to neuter the CF and destroy its fighting tradition.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to defend Mulroney... I don't even like Mulroney. I think he is the reason the Liberals governed for as long as they did after he single handedly destroyed the PC party. But what he did wasn't the same as what Chretien did with the EH 101 deal. At least with the Chinooks the CF had a choice of sorts on what to cut back on. Trudeau's bastard child didn't even give them that.

I read that the famous British Nimrod is actually the military version of the first commercial jet airliner - the Commet. They are currently being refurbished and are expect to be in service until 2020, 70 years.

Yea, they share DNA but really the Nimrod bears little resemblance to the last version of the Comet 4C.
Different fuselage, wings, engines etc but the airframe is basically the same, with lots of strengthen to carry all the avionics and weapons. Plus the structure is very different as the aircraft has a rather large bomb bay
