Perhaps the free market will solve the problem, but I think it will end up the way it is here. It costs $1200 - $1500 for a 'starter' AR-15, at Cabellas because supply is low and demand is high. If Dicks, Cabellas etc. stop carrying them, then the mom and pop outfits will carry them, and at a premium price.

A premium price is a deterrent. I've been saying for awhile that whatever solutions they decide to implement, if it's armed guards at school or more money for mental health, or whatever; they should be taxing ammo to pay for it.
If bullets are more expensive, you WILL sell less of them.

Interesting because I hear Republicans really love Dicks and might find this position hard to swallow. This whole thing might not go down well and could blow up in their faces

Well, Americans are all about free market solutions, not government intervention, so this might be a Made in America solution that could actually work...but I'm not holding my breath just yet.

Sudden attack of corporate responsibility erupts at WalMart of all places: https://www.rawstory.com/2018/02/walmar ... rearms-21/$1: The retail giant Walmart on Wednesday released a stunning statement raising the minimum age to purchase firearms in its stores to 21.
“In light of recent events, we’ve taken an opportunity to review our policy on firearm sales,” Walmart said in a statement. “Going forward, we are raining the age restriction for purchase of firearms and ammunition to 21 years of age.”
Walmart also reminded customers it “ended sales of modern sporting rifles, including the AR-15” back in 2015. “We also do not sell handguns, except in Alaska where we feel we should continue to offer them to our customers,” Walmart added.
The company also noted it “does not sell bump stocks, high-capacity magazines and similar accessories.”
We take seriously our obligation to be a responsible seller of firearms,” Walmart said, adding the company does not sell firearms until customers pass a background check—stricter requirements than the Federal law. Watch some well-funded greaseball lawyers from the NRA take them to court though, saying that there's no age restriction allowed on a constitutional right. And after that it'll be no worse than 50/50 odds that the court sides against WalMart. Just the way it is down there now in DystopiaLand.

I heard about this earlier today and I was gong to comment the same before I read your post. I'm sure the NRA will be all over it.

Dicks stock prices are up, gun shares are down, and Walmart has also imposed an age restriction.

This anti-assault weapon, anti-NRA posturing by the big corporations is just temporary PR in the wake of a tragedy. I’m sure the previous status quo will return in the coming months.
