This has been in the works for years. The problem is that in order to use an old drug for a new purpose, you have to do human trials first to study effects. But old drugs aren't patentable, and therefore drug companies won't make anything back in royalties. So, they don't want to fund the human trials. :(

It really pisses me off that the big companies won't fund it. I hope this gets funding none the less. Maybe a guy like Bill Gates will come forward and fund it. If there is a potential cure for cancer I think it needs to be tested. I lost my dad to that disease and I wish they'd cure it so no one else suffers watching a loved one die.

The same thing that stops them from giving you an IV drip of pure heroin, I assume...

Good point. I suppose a Doctor risks losing his license.

I wonder if one could get it on the Street though? If I was diagnosed, I think I might be willing to risk it.

Almost feels like the companies don't really want to find a cure; might hurt sales.

Apoptosis is not merely a function of the mitochondria. It's an interrelzted mechanism involving the mitochondria and several important proteins / enzymes. Cracking the mitochondrial link alone won;t help.

They can but there but there still needs to be quantifiable data to back up the claims, along with data that will give them the optimal dosage. Then health Canada will need a few million dollars before they approve it for use, followed by the provinces who stick their hands out for a million dollars each to approve the same thing.
There are a few old drugs that were made for one condition and are used for another. Gabapentin was originally for epilepsy but was a dud and didn't work, but 20 years later it's use is growing but is used as a non narcotic for nerve pain. Works well for most people and if prescribed properly, the doctor only needs to fill out a few forms for it to be used.

I was taking this article as gospel, and going 'wow', until it started talking about Stanley Meyer, and Monsanto. Then I said to myself, 'Wait a minute', and went to Snopes.

I started using Lyrica( Pregabalin)and it has done wonders for neuropathic pain, where Tegretol, Amitriptyline and some other SSRIs did SFA except give me nasty withdrawal symptoms. I've also had avastin(a tumour shrinking drug) injections to treat macular degeneration.

I worked with Dr. Michelakis and that is essentially true. He would love to run extensive human trials, but they are very expensive to conduct (the $800k he raised initially was enough for 50 subjects) and pharma generally isn't interested in funding something they cannot patent.

However, this article calls it a cure for cancer, which is not - at least not yet. If you check on Youtube, there are a number of interviews with Dr. Michelakis (including one with Glenn Beck), and he is careful to note it is NOT a cure, but has potential for treating SOME forms of cancer.

Having said all of that, there are lots of researchers worldwide who are conducting their own studies on DCA, so this is hardly being ignored as this article claims.
