Mis-representation is not "freedom of speech on the internet",it is a crime.

Yeah right, when Hugo Chavez does the same thing the right screams bloody murder.

Taking out 4500 innocent businesses in the process. A nice complement to proroguing parliament. Whats next?

Like I said in another thread. Gov't and Technology. Beancounters who think they know computers. I deal with these idiots day in and day out. The uppity snots think they're so smart and can't even copy a freaking file without Windows Explorer from 3.1.
Wanna know how they work?
1: Get a committee from north central BC together to improve their Internet exposure, increase local exposure and boost employment in their area. What do they come up with? A Texas registrar and webhost, a Toronto/Vancouver web designer an absurd domain name and cancel all their web/mail/design accounts with ISPs in the area they serve. Then offer free pages to local companies so they don't have to 'buy' one from those local ISPs.
D'ooooohhh!
investnorthernbc - we fucking won't.....
2: Run out of printer ribbon at the Welfare Office. Stop printing cheques until the ribbon gets there by courier and the guy from the gov't shows up to install it. THe office is next door to a computer store. Ribbons are $3.99 and even the teen at the till knows how to put one it.
"Oh but there's matters of confidentiality." Fuck you, the town's so small WE already know before you do....
3: LCB allows no petty cash. Two or three times a year someone must go to the copy store and write a cheque for 90 cents for photocopies.
Solution: Call Canon or Xerox and lease a copier for $500 a month and 15c a copy maintenance contract.
4: Nurses and Social Workers need to access database. Contract and send techs all over province to install WAN links and software on their computers. Putting up a web-based system isn't secure enough.
For gov't. It is for the Banks, the Credit Unions, Amazon, E-Bay and all the ATM terminals though...
The IT ignorance of these $100K a year Manadarins is astounding. Out-dims that found in a corporate boardroom.

You know, it's always Harper's fault. Global warming, war, poverty and probably erectile dysfunction too.

Because like all what is capitalist, Harper is evil.

well doing the research this group went out of it's way to make the fake press release look as authentic as possible. It looks exactly like the government of Canada site.

Just because the IT companies screwed up doesn't mean that Canada wasn't in the right to act against these global warming fanatics trying to hurt the government.

It's fraud really. Internet or not.

I mean if I opened up a site close to the name of a major site like lets say I buy the site goggle.com instead of google and make a front page very very similar to google but simply says "F*&& you" every time you do a search I'd be sued almost instantly.

Yeah let's all put on our best constipated conservative hats and pretend it's criminal. Might cause the world to collapse like pie-ing a politician does.

No it's not criminal but it is damaging and misleading for the government of Canada. I would say they have every right to sue.

Well, the businesses that had their websites wiped out probably have a right to sue too.

I would honestly be interested in seeing the government's lawsuit against the hoaxsters play out in court, just because Im not sure how intellectual property rights would play out in that case. If they were a private company, they would certainly have a case and it would follow that they do have one...but because they are a public institution, it might be hard to demonstrate that they suffered any damages or loss as a result and the hoaxsters would likely mount a claim to free speech.

Either way, its a matter of civil law, not criminal law.
