How many "red flags" will it take to scuttle this deal?

Most of Nexen's holdings are outside Canada.

I don't really see the problem.

Just like all of the 'isolated incidents' involving muslims over the past decade it seems that certain people in the media and government are bound and determined to ignore the myriad of aggressive acts by China over the past so many years.

In the paper this morning is an article about how Japan is now looking to modify their pacifist constitution to allow their military to take much more affirmative actions against Chinese imperialism. I persoanlly think that's a good idea give the US retreat from the Western Pacific under the current administration. Japan simply cannot rely on the USA anymore for their national security.

I did.

I think they will strip Nexen of their foriegn holdings and even if they keep the shell, they will not have much more influence over the Canadian oil market than they have now.

(putting aside the whole dealing with the Chinese government thing)

Nexen will only exist as CNOOC's brand in the new world. They'll likely lose the gulf of Mexico assets, as the US would have a problem with the Chinese Communist Party owning royalty free drilling leases in the United States. They may be more interested in Nexen's deep sea drilling and oil sands technology and the Syncrude stake. If this deal flys the CCP would be the third largest shareholder in Canada's largest oilsands producer.

Canada needs to examine Nexen sale to China
$1:
David Kilgour was a Member of Parliament for 27 years, and during that time served in both Conservative and Liberal governments, and finally became an independent MP on issues of principle.

At present he is best known for investigative work with human rights lawyer David Matas, into China’s appalling record of harvesting human organs from convicts and Falun Gong dissidents for sale to foreigners. Their book, Bloody Harvest(itls), is a powerful indictment of the practice and is taken seriously in the UN and around the world.
...
Kilgour notes that it is now up to Prime Minister Stephen Harper to decide whether the sale represents a “net benefit” to Canada, and doesn’t undermine of threaten “national security,” as defined by the Investment Canada Act.

According to Kilgour: “Harper should block the proposed takeover and make it clear that any state-owned enterprise, regardless of national origin, will be limited to a minority share-holding in any Canadian business.”

Kilgour's plan sounds good to me.

Sounds like a great idea to me too. So long as it applies to all State owned companies, not just ones from China.
