$1:
``The Conservatives recently came out and said they would not be funding sports arenas in Quebec (City) or other cities. We took that as them having some sense of austerity,'' he said. ``But this week's announcements are not in that spirit. We were hoping they'd take the overspending and deficit at least half-seriously.''

Hahahahahah.. It's like the Canadian Taxpayers Federation has no idea how expensive pork-barreling is.

Might as well say that the election in June is official.

$1:
More than $504 million - was earmarked for Quebec, with $228 million down for construction upgrades on two Montreal bridges, $154 million for economic development agencies and $50 million to modernize the Quebec City airport.

Is this is more hidden agenda horse-shit ? Because I didn't see Hockey arena in there.

Buying our votes with our own money. How often does that happen, and actually work?

All the time and all the time. Politics as usual in Canada. It really is at the heart of politics. Each party tries to funnel money to the groups of voters they think will help them come to power, while trying to take it from those who won't vote for them anyway.

Tackling deficit no longer top priority, CEOs say
By RICHARD BLACKWELL
From Monday's Globe and Mail

With economic recovery well under way, executives say investment is key to maintaining the momentum
On the eve of a federal budget, Canadian executives say the economic outlook is strong enough that Ottawa shouldn't make paying down the deficit its top priority - instead it should look for ways to reinforce the recovery by putting money into training, infrastructure and R&D.

... Almost three in five executives said investing in education and training should have a high priority in the budget, while 52 per cent said investing in research and development is key. Transportation and infrastructure were a top priority for 42 per cent of those who responded, while attacking the deficit came in fourth place - a high priority for 39 per cent of executives...

Yeah, I've got a feeling that while Harper's budget may pass, the vote on government conduct (which is being treated as a confidence motion) will cause the government to fall.

I would agree with those executives, but I'd like to see them put up some of their own money for those things. Industry should be spending it's own money on training, instead of expecting the govt to do it or always asking for more immigrants to get trained people for free. Train em yourself, the way you want them, and then have good policies in place to retain the people you trained. It will benefit your business.

Same with R&D - industry needs to be investing in that. But, since we have a corporate welfare mentality in Canada, that doesn't happen.

Transportation and infrastructure tho, should be provided by the govt.

Alternatively, raise the corporate tax rate to pay for training and R&D. Can you imagine the howls of outrage if the govt did that?
