Today, CNN released a statement noting that "Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well."

After a faux pas like that is it any wonder they canned his stupid ass. My guess would be that he got a better job offer someplace else and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory.
