Alright, more money for the slush funds for lackeys post-career like Stockwell Day. Just take the money from the budget of the RCMP, they don't need it anyways.

BBC has much better content. If it's enough to get rid of low-budget "Canadian content" programs nobody watches and hockey and replce those with Canadian-centric higher production quality shows that people want to watch, then I'm all for it.

All for an extra $400M a year given to state run, national media? No. Unless they are going to find savings elsewhere, such as transfer payments to communist Ontario or budget cuts to Stasi, unaccountable RCMP.

After NAFTA gets slashed, Canada is going to be in a worse situation, we don't need to throw around hundreds of millions as if it's candy. If CBC cannot be profitable and self sustainable then shut it down.

Wr already have multiple tv stations that are profitable and self sustainable They air nothing but reality shows, major league sports, and cheesy prime time drivel like NCIS and Scandal, almost all US made content that barely acknowledges Canada exists. We don't need CBC to become another of those.

The free markets speaks. If people don't want to watch that, they don't need to and the ratings will drop, advertisers will cancel, the show will be sunsetted. I don't watch the junk you speak of (except for sports), but, someone must.

There are satellite packages, Netflix, 400 channels now on "standard" tv. It's a competitive business, why should CBC be propped up? It already has some distinct advantages, a raise shouldn't be one of them.

Capitalist nations are losing our edge because we are not capitalist anymore, the foundations and principles of capitalism are fading fast, we will be far less off for it. The same way we have been with a lack of individual liberty and freedom. A far poorer existence than we should have.

**Edited because the rest of your post was superfluous.

CBC lost it's net worth when it lost HNIC. It's been estimated that HNIC alone accounted for more than 50% of CBC's ad revenue on it's English language TV service.

In an internal memo at that time, CBC President Hubert Lacroix said, "it's clear that tough and more fundamental decisions will have to be made to establish a longer-term, sustainable, financial model for our corporation."

Looks like begging for more tax dollars turned to be the new financial model.

Yeah so? I say good riddance. HNIC is an example of what CBC should NOT be doing. It should be providing content that is necessary such as news and information and Canadian content that is worth watching. We don't need more simpsons reruns or reality tv on every goddam channel we need a channel that provides quality programming alternative not just the same mindless drek. Just because the drek is the most popular and profitable doesn't mean that is the only thing people want.

Make cuts or perish. If they need money take it from the RCMP budget or cut out transfer payments to Ontario. Call it "trickle down police cuts".

Someone has to pay the piper if CBC needs money, take it from those most attached to the trough least accountable and those who produce the greatest barriers to business and economic success, that being the undercover police in Ontario. Otherwise, let the CBC find it's own way through.

And the BBC is ad free. If they can make some of the best shows worldwide, why can't the CBC?

For a few bucks more a year, I say give it a try.

the BBC's annual budget is over $5B pounds, approximately 10x the CBC annual budget, and this 'extra' money would not necessarily improve anything at the CBC as it would just offset losses in add revenue. Hence, I wouldn't expect anything spectacular from the CBC with an additional $400M.

That's a huge amount of money being unloaded onto the already significantly over used public purse. I say no, let those that watch the CBC put up with the adds so the rest of us don't have to use any more of tax payers money.

The BBC is years ahead of the CBC in quality programming and $400 million isn't going to change that because you can't fix stupid.

The BBC is also funded differently. It gets a share of the revenue for the tax on every TV set in the UK.

That's how it can produce shows like Top Gear and Doctor Who.

I hope your not proposing another tax for the CBC?
