Guess the feds will have to shut down the auto manufacturing sector altogether given that internal-combustion powered vehicles are responsible for about one-third of overall emissions. Sorry, auto-workers, but I guess you should have saved some pennies for a rainy day.

So that's just the taxes collected, not actually doing anything.
Because collecting does nothing.... except punish people, of course.

So it's just not enough of your tax money being collected.

It's not a tax if the funds are returned via an annual cheque.

They can build EVs. Every car company has plans for new lines of them.

The report also stated if we had started this back in 2010 like was suggested, the cost would be half. Like people have been saying, the sooner we start the pain, the less it will be.

Yeah but it's no fun unless one sector and one sector alone gets blamed for everything wrong and that their employees deserve what happens to them. There's no amusement, Canadian-style, in it without an opportunity to be all preachy and smug about someone else's downfall.

I'm all for a good Schadenfreude, but I'm not into blaming any one industry for our woes.

It's the western lifestyle in general, and the shortcuts we took to get here, that is the problem. We all need to share in the responsibility.

With some getting given a larger share than others, as per tradition. Even if those providing the bigger share are down on their knees in despair and economic malaise.

Here's what I think will happen. The carbon tax may very well go up to $210 a ton. If it does the price of gas will go up. Food, clothes, shelter and everything else will go up with it.

But we won't make these Paris targets we're pretending to care about. Even if by some miracle we do make them it won't mean shit.

That's the system we are in. :(

It would be nice if tax cuts for the wealthy were instead given to the middle class, but the middle class aren't the ones making the decisions. :(

Your point is also true but I was speaking more to the regional inequality in this country that's led to the development of a system of first-class and second-class citizenship based on nothing more than what part of the country one resides in. Odd, isn't it, that those who built and defend this system are far closer to socialism than capitalism in ideology have somehow managed to create something as radically unfair and unjust as the unhinged renegade anarcho-capitalism practiced in the United States is.

There are more divisions than just East/West. There are also North/South, Canadian/First Nations, Urban/Rural.

But the divisions are not out of malice, they just grew because they followed the population movement. First Nations and rural residents have it hard, because there are so few of them. The East decides for the West, simply because they have the numbers.

Even the Greeks knew that Democracy would always be a tyranny of the Poor over the Rich, because the Rich were outnumbered. Once we allowed political contributions, and no inheritance tax, we ensured the Rich would become a ruling class able to buy the laws they want. That leaves everyone else as the second and least important class.

That why anyone pushing unchecked capitalism on me I view as suspicious.

I don't push anything. It took me fifty years to finally realize that ANYTHING humans do ends up in failure, tyranny, and disaster. There is no cure for this disease. And the disease itself is just going to endlessly adapt itself to anything new that comes along, the same way it's always done.
