With a Tiger torch, at about 1200 degrees. That's how to clean a BBQ. :)

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
Sandblast them.

But then it wears them away. If you heat them to glowing, and food turns to ash, then the racks are clean. Learnt that from a Jew.

It's also the way they keep the BBQ kosher, so that meat and milk can never touch. Because, they are ashes . . ;)

Hmmm. I'll have to keep all of that in mind since Mrs. Bart bought me a BBQ for my birthday (which will be a TOTAL surprise, I assure you!)

I'll go with Bart and sand blast them, if the grate isn't thick enough you have a good chance of warping it with the excessive heat. I guess the same problem with sand blasting if the grate is on the thin side they will wear too much....six of one, a half dozen of the other. Of course there is the chemical choice.....spray on, wipe off and hope you rinse it properly......

OK, so how do you sandblast without a sand blaster ?

I got a lot of crap in my garage now, but a sandblaster isn't on the list.

I say people just need to inspect their grill after using a wire brush.

30+ years and haven't had anyone eat a bristle yet. 8)

I use a 3000psi pressure washer, takes about 15 minutes.

Yeah, and if not that just take them to the coin-op car wash. The grills are all removable and not that big so a flat Rubbermade tub with cola in it would work to. If corrosive cola can remove tar & oil from a car body then it can probably clean off a BBQ grill just as easily too.

First time I used a brass brush, I thought "Ewwwww! Now all that grease is trapped in the brush till the next time I bbq, then I can add more!" PDT_Armataz_01_32 After getting a few bristles in my fingers and thinking "hey, I wonder what swallowing one would be like?", I went back to the extreme heat method. I tried chemicals a couple times, but they are too messy. And what if you miss some on the racks? And there was always a funny smell the next time the BBQ got heated up.

Pressure washing might be a good idea too. But a tiger torch hears the whole BBQ up and cleans everything all at once. Rocks, burners - all of it. :)

Kiss it with the purifying flame!!
