They say this draft is so choice to at least #18 and the Canadian teams are for the most part drafting so high it's hard to see how they can do anything, but make out like bandits today.

Congrats Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary you got great picks.

Thanks for nothing Jim Benning.

I thought this draft is so deep nobody can screw it up. Thanks for proving me wrong Jim Benning. :(

Here's a list of what happened, if you missed it.

The Flames scored the biggest win with Matt Tkachuk IMO. Amazed that he slid down to 7th pick when some of the rankings had him to go as the 1st. If he's half as great, tough, and mean-spirited a player on the ice as his dad was then the Flames have the potential to put together one of the great first lines in the league if they hook him up with Gaudreau and Monahan.

Plus you guys get your goaltender.

Speaking of Christmas, the Canucks Jim Benning must have thought that's what it was, because he gifted what I thought was the enemy with a scorer and the missing piece to what will be the flames big line - with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau.

Isn't this the second year in a row the Flames have scored in the draft?

Oh well...some can do the draft and some can't, I guess. Kudos to Calgary for being among the ones that can.

How does Detroit convince AZ to take Datsyuk who, came out earlier this weeek to announce his retirement from the NHL so he can play back in Russia next year. Plus his $7.1M cap hit.

Teams are only required to publicly disclose the portions of deals that pertain to players and the cap.

Aside from AZ acquiring, arguably the most influential Russian, for the long term, in regards to scouting and acquiring Russian players, there could be portions of the deal that we are not privy too.

You mean the part where everyone at the Wings table roll on the floor laughing now that they have cap room to go after Stamkos

If you base every business decision on another, mutually exclusive action, you won't be in business for very long.

If Arizona was in serious contention for Stamkos, they probably wouldn't have made this deal. If they aren't, then they don't really care what other teams are doing to try to get Stamkos, they are only concerned with Arizona's short and long term development.

Doesn't it go something like there's a cap floor that Arizona had to reach anyway of 52.8 mill? So Arizona doesn't actually pay anything extra to take over the Datsyuk contract. Isn't that the way it works?

Arizona eats the final year of the Datsyuk contract for Detroit and gets a second first rounder at 16 in a draft that's supposed to be deep to 18.

In fact the Coyotes got to draft Jacob Chychrun, who earlier in the year was slated as high as fourth, then slipped for reasons nobody seems sure of. Draft people think he was a steal at 16 though.

Oh, and I take back all the nasty things I said about Jim Benning. I've been reading around and I understand the decision better. Go Baby-face (which is my new name for Juolevi, the guy we picked)
