Punching above their weight seems to be a CF tradition.

The arithmetic is interesting. In six months Nato logged 17,000 sorties. That may sound like a lot. However over six months it's only 100 a day. There's probably a hundred airplanes in the theater so a flight a day might be the load. The 700 CF-18 flights divide out to 4 sorties a day by six aircraft.

These jet air forces are devastating. They can haul bombs out to a distant theater very efficiently. It's nothing like WWII where 1000's of airplanes were required.

I still find it hilarious that we contribute this much and yet we get little recognition for it from our own and other people. I was reading in the paper that the majority of Canadians want us out of combat roles and back to peacekeeping, somehow making a region able to keep the peace on its own is less of an issue than keeping it for them.

The Libyian war has been a success. The rebels managed to take over from a heavily armed dictator. It's amazing. The NATO role help, did not involve boots on the ground. This is a good news story. We hope the rebels are effective at forming a government - currently they are run by a former judge.

The operation is only a success if civilians are not harmed in the transition government. The purpose of the operation was not the removal of Gadaffi, but to protect civilians. So don't pull a Bush and declare mission accomplished just because the regime has been toppled.

Good for Canada though. They have a pretty good reputation over here too.
