We Canadians like it. It's a constant reminder of the ass kicking we gave them in 1812.
Agreed, but have you ever confronted Americans online with that?
What I get back is, "No you didn't. It was the British army."
I can't figure out how to counter that one because although it's not exactly true, it's mostly true.
It was the British Army that sacked Washington. It was the Brits, allied indigenous peoples and proto-Canadian settler militias that repelled the invasion of Canada and captured many US sites. Which we gave back after the Treaty of Ghent because that's just how we roll.
In grade school they taught us a lot about that General Brock Character. The idea was he was instrumental in pushing back the Americans. Then he died in that battle at Queenston Heights. My teacher gave me the impression that was a major if not the major battle and
Britain Canada won.
Oh and another one I remember hearing about was Major General Procter. I know him from a based on fact novel about Tecumseh I read years and years ago. The way they told it the British General jammed out and ran from a big battle leaving Tecumseh to deal with the attacking force. Tecumseh died.
And some commercial they used to show back east years and years ago had Laura Secord running through the woods to warn
THE BRITISH that the Americans were coming. Hey...she was like our Paul Revere.
But yeah, I got the impression the British were pretty heavily involved.
