Two things.

One not long enough!

Two why do we need to know he was a soldier. If he were in any trade but the magic few it would have been "BC Man". Are they just going for shock or implying something?

I think it is important to note in a story because violent behaviour in active and retired military personnel can sometimes be traced to PTSD. This doesn't excuse the behaviour but given the current push to bring awareness to the disorder I don't have a problem with reporting that it was a soldier.
