I thought to myself, 'That's odd we already have a provincial carbon tax. Why would the new federal one affect us? Did our provincial government see it as an opportunity or something?'
Why don't you read a real newspaper or something before "thinking" sometime?
The federal tax didn't do fuck all to BC prices, it was ALL, about 20 odd cents increases by the OIL COMPANIES. The provincial tax hits tomorrow and that's a whole 1.1 cents.
So when it goes up another dime tomorrow I'm sure you'll bitch about the penny tax and not the 9 cent grab.
Oddly enough I agree with you about the perceived reason for the increase. But where I differ is in what I think the real cause for that increase is.
We ended up with an increase on our gas prices because of the carbon tax but also, because the Oil companies are fighting back against our unreasonable stance on pipelines with the only tool they have in their tool box, CAPACITY. And since no gov't can "make" oil companies increase or maintain their refinery capacity just to keep them happy we're reaping what a radical and unreasonable minority of British Columbian's and the gov't that caters to them have sown.
But what's really interesting in the article is Horgan's statement about increasing capacity because it may actually indicate a shift from "no" to "maybe" to "go for it" and the reason I say that is because reading the news the other day it appears that the Green/NDP honeymoon may be coming to an end.
Apparently Weaver is at odds over Horgan's LNG policies and is seriously thinking about not supporting the current gov't anymore because of it. So, if that happens Horgan has two choices. First to let his gov't fall or secondly to make a deal with the Liberals to allow the Trans Mountain pipeline to be built with no gov't opposition for the promise that they won't bring down his gov't on that or any other energy initiative that they support.
Not being a fly wearing a sleeveless shirt on the wall of the Legislature though I won't try and guess what Horgans mindset on this issue but, what I do know is that if an election was called today he and his party would be gone because most people are really pissed off about the handling of the Trans Mountain Pipeline and the resulting 14 cent per liter overnight jumps in gas prices and that includes the old school NDP union types.
