$1:
Horgan said he can't explain a 12 cent a litre increase and perhaps the industry should invest more in refineries and the federal government should invest more in supply.

Says the guy who's been working exclusively to block "ANY"fossil fuel pipelines in his province. ROTFL Can you say hypocritical?

Or, maybe he thinks the more supply should only happen in someone else's province.

So the dolt is going to 'monitor' prices over the summer when gas will most likely be at its highest. Well that will certainly help./s

On Monday, British Columbia's long-standing carbon tax increased to $40 a ton, which is double the federal carbon tax introduced in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick — provinces that did not previously have any carbon tax in place.

That adds another 1.2 cents per litre at the pump, McTeague said.

"When you look at the totality of gas taxes now in B.C., no small amount can be easily or cavalierly dismissed. You're paying over 52 cents a litre in taxes to the federal, provincial, carbon and TransLink taxes," he said. "That puts you at variance with most other provinces by as much as 18 to 20 cents a litre more."

It's so nice when it happens to those who deserve it the most. Here's the view from Alberta to your problems:

Yeah, everyone knows that. They vary 18 to 20c because they pay that much in transit tax there
And the carbon tax, we're used to and only goes up ONE PENNY.

So here's the same usual suspects blaming taxes as the gouge. And pipelines.

When the pipeline IS built it will cause gas prices to go UP not down. Increasing the number of buyers at an auction doesn't make prices go down.

Vancouver's prices are 100% it's own fault for closing all those refineries in the 1970s.

I know...

I couldn't believe it when I went to gas up and saw the price on the pump. It jumped more than a dime a litre in a couple of weeks. Nobody even saw it coming. It happened right after Trudeau passed his carbon tax thing and I thought to myself, 'That's odd we already have a provincial carbon tax. Why would the new federal one affect us? Did our provincial government see it as an opportunity or something?'

Then I thought to myself 'Gotta get me one of those Yellow Vests.'

Why don't you read a real newspaper or something before "thinking" sometime?
The federal tax didn't do fuck all to BC prices, it was ALL, about 20 odd cents increases by the OIL COMPANIES. The provincial tax hits tomorrow and that's a whole 1.1 cents.
So when it goes up another dime tomorrow I'm sure you'll bitch about the penny tax and not the 9 cent grab.

Really? You know of a newspaper that has the answer to the question "Why such a drastic and sudden jump in gas prices?" By all means, give us a link for a change. Don't just claim it's out there and expect us to trust you.

The article in the OP can only offer this below as an explanation from the Progressive Socialist Party you voted for.

$1:
Horgan said he can't explain a 12 cent a litre increase and perhaps the industry should invest more in refineries and the federal government should invest more in supply.

So our current Dear Leader claims he doesn't have an actual answer but he can insinuate a claim. Somehow in your true believer brain you convert that into a belief it's a fact.

Oddly enough I agree with you about the perceived reason for the increase. But where I differ is in what I think the real cause for that increase is.

We ended up with an increase on our gas prices because of the carbon tax but also, because the Oil companies are fighting back against our unreasonable stance on pipelines with the only tool they have in their tool box, CAPACITY. And since no gov't can "make" oil companies increase or maintain their refinery capacity just to keep them happy we're reaping what a radical and unreasonable minority of British Columbian's and the gov't that caters to them have sown.

But what's really interesting in the article is Horgan's statement about increasing capacity because it may actually indicate a shift from "no" to "maybe" to "go for it" and the reason I say that is because reading the news the other day it appears that the Green/NDP honeymoon may be coming to an end.

Apparently Weaver is at odds over Horgan's LNG policies and is seriously thinking about not supporting the current gov't anymore because of it. So, if that happens Horgan has two choices. First to let his gov't fall or secondly to make a deal with the Liberals to allow the Trans Mountain pipeline to be built with no gov't opposition for the promise that they won't bring down his gov't on that or any other energy initiative that they support.

Not being a fly wearing a sleeveless shirt on the wall of the Legislature though I won't try and guess what Horgans mindset on this issue but, what I do know is that if an election was called today he and his party would be gone because most people are really pissed off about the handling of the Trans Mountain Pipeline and the resulting 14 cent per liter overnight jumps in gas prices and that includes the old school NDP union types.

Personally I agree with the GasBuddy guy in the OP that there were a number of factors involved but I'm not prepared to totally disregard my first shock hypothesis when seeing the drastic rise at the pumps.

I'm not sure that the introduction of a federal carbon tax in the 4 other provinces didn't at least help to spark a perfect storm of multiple factors hitting all at once in BC.

FFS oldguy, the NDP's actually conceded that it lost the pipeline war, that all that's left is their Hail Mary shot if BC can control the content of what's in the TMP.
Like I said on Day One, the NDP only needed to put up a good show against it and they did. The pro-LNG stance proves they're NOT "against development" and they're NOT the Green party.

The real question about the pipeline is WTF is going on? they've had time to consult every fucking person in Canada with a drop of native blood and write 3 Marine reports

BC NEEDS that pipeline capacity and it NEEDS a new refinery to take some of that capacity to supply ourselves. And you gotta admit, if someone talked about building that BC refinery Horgan would be kissing their ass.

The fed's are stalling is what's going on. Like you say, everybody in Canada could have been consulted in the time it took for them to just do the BC Natives. But, time aside we likely won't see any movement till after the election and who wins will set the pace for how soon the thing get's built and then partially sold to the Natives. Which BTW is a tactic that I personally don't like but I can fully understand since when was the last time you saw the Natives claim the moral high ground while protesting other Natives. :P

As for the BC NDP, they may know they've lost the pipeline battle but to stay in power they need the Greens and given Weavers stance on pipelines they have to at least make it look like they'll fight the pipeline no matter what the Fed's do.

But a question. If the NDP gov'ts thinks they've lost the pipeline battles why are they spending tax dollars on being one of the litigants in court?

I do agree with you that we need to drastically increase our own refinery capacity for the Coast because being at the whim of BP's less than ethical business model for supplying our gas is starting to become very expensive and frustrating.
