FFS they're 8 week old cubs.
If what the people from the Black Bear Recovery Centre in Errington have said is true they won't become a nuisance when they grow up. Apparently they show no real domestication or predication towards living out of a garbage can despite them eating some garbage and they are exhibiting wild bear tendencies.
I'm personally glad this Conservation Officer gave them a chance because no animal should be put down based on some citified bureaucratic policy and just because Black Bears aren't protected doesn't mean we shouldn't keep them that way.
Hell, why isn't the Provincial gov't killing baby seals which, as a species cause considerably more damage and economic devastation than black bears will ever do and if they learn from their parents then it's a guarantee they'll become a nuisance at some point? Simply put, because they're cute and if they killed them they'd lose votes. Black Bears not so much especially when we can portray them as nuisances.
If these bears become problems in the future then, we'll have ample time to deal with them otherwise let them live. It's not like they're going to be released in some town or village.
Apparently the 38,455 people who have so far signed the petition don't agree with you.
