It was an accident but even if it were deliberate no one would go to prison. The US Supreme Court ruled that burning a US flag is a protected right of expression.

You're crazy, in Ukraine it's 3 years of prison for Ukrainian flag and 2 years for flag of foreign country. Few years ago in one villigage man cleaned his boots with Ukrainian flag and got 3 years.
