I'm an AGW skeptic, but I've been noticing the big spiders myself.

Started about 3 or 4 years ago, the weather starts to cool down in the autumn and there's this spider the size of my thumb running around on the carpet.

It happens. Warm summers mean longer before a killing frost, and more for the spiders to eat. I have a few the size of my thumb outside my door and around my shed catching mayflies and wasps. Slurrrp!

Folks should leave spiders alone, unless they're multiplying inside the living areas of the house. They're the wolves of the insect world and are vitally important at keeping the worst of the pest bugs under control.

Same with frogs. They keep the spiders under control.

Turns out ladybugs are remorseless killers of pests as well. The usual late summer invasion of gnats that Calgary gets hasn't been as severe over the last few years since someone came upon the brilliant idea of breeding and selling bags full of ladybugs. Put them in a backyard with a gnat problem and the ladybugs end up nuking the annoying little bastards within a few days. Ladybugs apparently go after newly hatched mosquitos too which also explains why the late-season skitter problems also haven't been as severe around here as they used to be.

Dragonflies are my favorite to have in the backyard.

No other flying insect is safe. Half a dozen of them will decimate the black fly and skeeter swarms.

I've got quite the colelciton in my lawn irrigation access hatch. A false black widow and a big brown ugly thing that looks like a brown recluse. Sure hope it isn't. You do not want to get bit by one of those.

Highly improbable, as its normal range is thousands of miles far to your south east.

Huh, just googled it, and the issue is somewhat controversial. However, the evidence seems to support that there are none. How about that! I fell for an urban myth. Maybe I'm wrong about this whoel global warming business too.
