So they tabled the legislation yesterday, and it turns out this is just smoke and mirrors. For example, to recall someone in municipal positions, you'd need 40% or residents signatures. But municipal turn out last cycle was about 30%. so you basically have to go door to door, and run your own election.

They had to make it that way, or they would have risked the same type of recall that Premier Aberhart faced in the 1930s. Voters in his riding gathered the necessary signatures (2/3 of the riding) and with a recall election looming, the Socreds repealed the recall legislation.

Which is good, because voter recall is one of the stupidest things populism has ever come up with, and it's certainly the one most likely to be abused by those with an agenda based solely on disruption.

Populism is a cancer, designed to do nothing more than wreck the ability of the state to function.

Holding your MPs and MLAs to their campaign promises has been ruled less important than free speech and campaign lies.

It's not populism to expect dignity and honour from the people we hire to represent us. Voter recall is the only tool we have to do that.

I don't expect politicians to be angels. I just expect them not to be grotesquely obscene, the way Trump is. And all I really want from them is to not wreck the place entirely, which explains why I have such active antipathy towards the UCP because almost everything they do will make things worse.
