For 10 years the NDP promised to slay what is the monopoly of Alberta Electricity Generators. Now they got the reins to this dog and pony show and not a peep out of them.

Gonna take more than two months to slay that rotten fucking monster that took over the utilities during the Klein years. I'd suggest that they re-regulate and re-provincialize the entire system under government control and kick those Enron-scamming assholes out of Alberta altogether. Biggest rip off ever that the PC's ever inflicted on Albertans.

Oh, don't worry, they have plenty of time to get rid of AER. If they had had more than 2 weeks for session this go-round, it probably would have been legislated already. The fall session will be a full one and there will be all sorts of changes by Christmas.

How long does it take to put a freeze on rates until the next session starts up.
Kind of like, " the Alberta government purposes freezing electricity rates for the next 100 days, all in favor........... [cheer]

If something is covered by legislation (as I believe the creation of AER is), then the only legal method to change it is through an amendment to the original act (or a newer act to supercede the original), which takes time for the department responsible to draft, then legal has to check it for constitutionality and it goes through re-write after re-write so the government of the day has it just the way they want it. Then and only then can the legislation be brought forward in the house, which must be debated and passed. Things like that can take 6-9 months to do and the NDP has only been in office for two months total.

If this was part of their platform, you can expect that they have directed whichever ministry is responsible to get the ball rolling on it. If it's not, then you might have to wait until next year or the year after that.
