More important though, the court reaffirmed his right to take back property that was his:

$1:
Vigilante and vigilante justice are loaded words with negative connotations, the justices said. Those words suggest or imply an act of violence with deliberate intent to punish or avenge some perceived wrong or insult. Those negative connotations do not accurately capture Knights actions.

The appeal court ruled that Knight was not breaking the law in pursuing the thieves because a person is lawfully allowed to take back their own property from a trespasser as long as there is no physical harm. However, they said he broke the law and used excessive force when he fired the shotgun.

This is why I like Castle Doctrine. The entire onus of responsibility during the commission of a criminal act falls squarely upon the criminals and not upon the law abiding citizen or LEO who tries to stop them.
