They shouldn't play politics with the lives of RCAF pilots.

$1:
The Australian jets are nearly three decades old, roughly the same vintage as Canada's existing fighters and they have the same basic configuration.

So the Liberals are giving the Aussies a bunch of money for used aircraft that aren't any better than the planes they're replacing.

What's the friggin' point?

They have lower hours, and more than half of our original purchase planes are only good for parts now.

Politicians have been playing fast and loose with our soldiers since . . . forever, it seems.

capability cap, as in literally not enough jets to meet requirements.

Not just a Liberal problem though. These planes etc. etc. should have been replaced years ago.

Almost forty years later and I'm still of the belief they never should have been bought at all. If Canada had taken the F-16 instead we could have bought more fighters for the same price. Even more importantly General Dynamics has done such a great job of keeping the basic design modern with their multi-generation Block avionics package upgrades that today it's still one of the most effective planes available for the ground-attack role. Even today the F16 is still incredibly affordable right off the assembly line, which certainly can't be said of the Boeing SuperHornets that were supposed to replace our original Hornets.

Canadian military procurement will never be fixed. No matter which party is in control of the government it will always be a whore's den of politicians & bureaucrats being influenced far more by salesmen & lobbyists than they'll ever be by what's in the best interest of Canada's military.

So long as it's got more to do with economic and social agendas than effective warfighting you're right.

It's all about killing the enemy.

Period.

That could apply equally to the purchase of the dodgy F-35 Flying Gold Brick as to second hand Aussies fighters. How about a proper RCAF assessment of what's out there?
