Most become police officers because of a desire to help others. The jack booted thugs on power trips are an extremely tiny minority. Sort of like other professions that engage in public or societal service. 95% are motivated to make a positive change in society....others take advantage of the trust society places in these positions for their own nefarious ends. This includes police, clergy, educators and the military. Politicians on the other hand seem to be attracted to their positions for personal enrichment....not necessarily financial.

Actually the media loves these stories. Most don't get reported to the media, the cops just do their thing and move on. OTOH, cops gone wild will often be reported to the media.
