It's time we had a well trained, federal agency doing this sort of thing instead of a low-wage, mainly recent immigrant work force that barely speaks English.

I fly from Buffalo these days. YYZ is just a nightmare airport.

I have noticed a huge difference in the professionalism levels of security screeners in Canada and the US.

These Garda screeners just don't seem a credible security measure. I'm not sure if their routine rudeness is down to their lack of English skills but I would say 90% of those I have encountered can barely grunt in a language I can understand.

The only way things will change if something very bad happens, then the Feds will step in and set up a real federal service that provides proper screening and security. We are getting gouged enough for being fucked about while we travel to and from Canadian airports, I'm sure they could do it now.

We have all those well trained and security/terrorist-threat aware soldiers returning from Afghanistan. They would make a kick-arse security force.

The security screeners are employed by Garda World Security Corp., a company contracted by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority to conduct pre-boarding screening.

So the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority can get rid of these screeners by terminating their contract with Garda. How and when they can do this legally, and how the screeners can be replaced... I have no idea.

It's cute that a bunch of turds got canned for trying to be cute.

They thought they could beat the LEGAL injunction to prevent them from acting like turds and now they're sitting at home without pay. :lol:

As I understand it is the security guards are being asked to bid on irregular hour overtime premium. This is pretty brutal as the most desperate single moms will be pressured to put in low bids. Employers can trap disadvantaged people in today's labour marker and this is just an example of how hard they can squeeze.

the small businesses that I work with go through employees until they find one that is desperate enough to put up with it. businesses should offer something more than the minimum just as a matter of business relations. this is canada and businesses should be offering benefits, especially to longer term employees that fit in. the mean attitude that businesses should squeeze the bottom until they bleed may not be part of the Progressive Party of Canada's policy but it sure is part of the policy of the people that vote for them and why they are happy with a cold fish like Harper.

The Federal Labour Code states that overtime will be paid at time and a half. You can't have employees "bid" lower than that. If they are take them to the Labour Board and the government will force them to pay the difference. If they aren't then this is a non-issue and they should do the work they were hired to do.

All of the rights are in the employees favor, unions are redundant in this day and age.

That's usually how things work, Bruce.

People don't aspire to work at McDonalds, you gotta be a kid or desperate as hell to jump on that job.

As a business owner, I don't open a business to enhance the lives of others. I do it to make money.

I pay people the fair value for their services or what's legislated by law.

People are responsible for their choices and the career path they take. It shouldn't be on business owners to make up the difference in society. You're taking from one hand and giving it to the other, especially in the World of small business.

I'm suggesting the squeezing of the worst off is a problem. Very clearly this company is searching out the weak like a dog on a trail. I think they should offer a premium that would appeal to the keeners but draw the line at actually milking the worst off with official contract positions. Most companies aren't that desperate and have a good side to them and this one needs a good thumping to play a bit more fair. It's about drawing the line.
