They still have Delta-III's from the 1970's in service. They need to get rid of them.

Cool. I think they should just sink as many billions as they can into submarines and silly space stations. Russias' got about 10 years before another economical collapse that'll bring them down faster than the Wall. Until Russians get over their addiction to the 'strong man'-big brother style of leader then they ask for the life they get.

would you prefer Russia adopt a more subservient leader? Putin is in power because he led them out of the mire that Yeltsin got them into after '91. Russia will take along time to become the democratic state everyone wants them to be. Russia has already had its recession. this really is no different than the US and the Gerald Ford Class CVN. Russia can afford this, and really as pointed out, this is one of the first major SSN projects that Russia has undertaken since the Cold War.

No I would prefer Russia come in from the cold and mellow out. From what I can see in the past century+ Russians just don't seem to want to put their faith in a leader that isn't kicking them in crotch while looking tough to the rest of the globe. I don't care that they're making subs. Like I said, go ahead. The real question is, is the world really such a threatening place that they need to do their fly-bys and all the special Russian-style muscle flexing we thoguht was over after the Cold War. Could it be they're just not very imaginative?

$1:
Russia will take along time to become the democratic state everyone wants them to be.

Sure but you and I would disagree on the reasons. You might think it's because of yeltsin but they think of Gorbachev as a traitor too. The reason imo it'll be a long time before Russia is the democratic state 'everyone wants it to be' is because of the ingrained culture of 'Big brother' there I discribed.

I know they think Gorbachev is a traitor for his Glasnost policy. You don't do 300+ years of totalitarian and Autocratic rule and jump directly to democracy. as for the military flexing of the muscles its no different that what the States has done in the past, only we are brought up to believe that Russia is the evil red menace, while they were brought up to believe we, the west, are/were the menace.

I thought that's what I said?

Bolded the point. Yes during the Cold War everyone was a belligerent. I agree. Cold War is over. This is about 'Strong man rattling sabre for the People' not really about looking strong in the face of 'advisories' that don't really exist.

Maybe you were but not me.
I get the feeling you're painting my statement about them in the light of someone else's personality when on it's basic points we agree. They are too used to a totalarian leadership to completely give it up. It will be a while yet. I'm not about to scream "Better Dead than Red" if that's what you're expecting.

k, fair enough. I got my wires crossed. thanks for clarifying. it will be a while before the Putins are not needed. but for now he's too popular, I think its going to be at least a generation until true democracy takes hold.

Well...I admit my initial post was a little gruff towards them. Understandable. No worries on my end.
