Sadly with everything else happening it's still been an extremely shitty couple of weeks for the Airforce and anybody who says the military isn't a dangerous occupation unless you're in a war is an idiot.

Just a thought but maybe there are better ways to raise moral then flying tight formations of vintage 1960’s era planes?

If they're doing multiple flyovers across the country over the last couple of weeks then that increases both the likelihood of pilot fatigue as well as mechanical breakdown as the cause of the accident. It's a nice moral booster to see these things but they're not so important that they justify putting either the planes or the pilots under excessive stress over too short a period of time.

If the prescribed maintenance is being done, it shouldn’t be an issue. Unless it was a sudden catastrophic failure (which I suspect it was given the way the plane crashed).

A better question should be is why are we still using 60+ year old jets? Boeing is working on a replacement for the T-38 called the T-7 Hawk. Maybe we could buy a few of those instead of the overpriced Edsel that is the F-35.

It was incredible to see them fly right over our heads this week (and the wonder in my daughter's eyes as they roared over) was something for the ages. I've seen them at airshows before and have never seen them fly so close to people. She was so excited after watching the fly past that she said she wanted to be a pilot, and when she heard the news today, she was crushed.

Without COVID-19, this just as easily could have happened at an airshow, as has happened several times in the past two decades. The problem is that they are flying old airplanes, and even with the heroic level of maintenance done on them, they still break from time to time.

I'd say I hope this highlights the need for new planes, but sadly almost no politician of any stripe these days will spend a dime on something they deem frivolous like the Snowbirds. My money is that we'll hear the same old bullshit "Money is tight right now" and the Snowbirds will be disbanded in a few years when they can no longer get those ancient aircraft in the sky.

I think the RCAF have about 24 of them in total so if you do the math, we have less than a decade of snowbirds left. I highly doubt the government will swap out the jets any time soon. I could see them being disbanded in a few years as well. Sad, they are actively driving the squadron into the ground, slow death by millions of paper cuts.

I will say this, I have a very good friend on the team currently and he is one of the coordinators. Since their refreshed paint job they don’t have any tail numbers on the jets anymore. There was a few hours where I didn’t know if it was his jet or not that crashed. The video is pretty heart stopping, just goes to show how fast things can un ravel even in those old ‘slow’ jets.

It seems like the good people of Nova Scotia just can't catch a break lately. Its one thing to join the military when you have nothing going for you, like I did at 17 (not that there is anything wrong with that), but its quite another to sign up when you have already established a successful civilian career like Captain Jennifer Casey had. Lots of people spend their entire lives striving to achieve the success that Captain Casey had already achieved in the civilian world. For her to walk away from that successful career to serve her country in the military speaks to the high level of character that this young woman possessed. To lose someone of that high level of character is a severe blow to the military, and the country as a whole.

RIP Captain Jennifer Casey. You WILL be missed greatly.
