Thus begins the downfall of Westjet - I doubt they have what it takes to compete internationally against Air Canada and everyone else. Air Canada just has too many slots in all the desirable airports (London, Tokyo, etc).

To be honest, I don't think there is a truly international low-cost airline in the world (I would consider Ryanair, EasyJet et al to be regional, not international).

I hope not Boots. I would rather take Wesjet anywhere over Air Canada.

Personally, I don't see much difference between the two.

Westjet may have been better when it first started, but now, I just don't see it. The price and service roughly the same IMHO. Westjet has a few less fees that AC (checked baggage for example), but otherwise, they are almost exactly the same on price. Air Canada gets the nod for me because they have better connectors with their partner airlines (Star Alliance).

The only way Westjet survives going head-to-head with Air Canada internationally is if they can figure out a way to be more competitive.

Westjet's biggest advantage was that they only flew one type of plane and consequently lowered maintainence/ service, training & fuel costs. If they want to go international, they'll need another plane (they have two types now). That's further compounded by the lack of available long range planes (787s & A350s).

Maybe they can figure out something Canadian Airlines couldn't...but I won't hold my breath.

Now, they'll have to operate a whole range of aircraft. That, I understand, is poison for an airline. They make money with one type, simple formulae.

I always though the difference was 'service'. I haven't flown for a while, but the last time I did (Edmonton -> Montreal via Ottawa) everyone fromt the ticket counter to the in-flight crew were fun, cheerful and helpful at Westjet. At Air Canada the last time I flew (Edmonton -> Halifax via Toronto), several people were pissed off because they once again overbooked the flight, and to a person they were grumpy and didn't seem like they wanted to be there.

Edit - I even remember the Steward in Ottawa gave the safety lecture about seatbelts etc. in a 'Captain Kirk' cadence, in both English and French - and got a standing ovation.

Canadian used to be like that.

WestJet and AC may be similar in pricing but the service and dependability of schedule by WestJet is hands down superior. Telephone customer service right up to flight crew are way better. If you are taking a vacation don't chance it on Air Canada............take WestJet. Did a little WJ package to Hawaii last year and it was flawless. The reason we went to Hawaii is because Air Canada totally POOCHED our trip to Asia.

ppphhht You obviously don't fly much if at all. One thing I noticed about lefties is they all hope WestJet fails . Why is that? Must be an anti-west Liberal thing.

That thing with the Billy Goats Gruff happened a long time ago. You should just get over it and stop being so angry and bitter all the time.
