The remains of a World War II airman have been identified and will be returned to his U.S. hometown for burial nearly 70 years after his plane and two others slammed into a remote, jungle-covered mountainside in the South Pacific.
The Americans have been very carful to bring home each and every one of their fallen around the world, whenever possible. Something very similar happened to a family member of my wife, who went down in Holland in a Wellington and was not found until decades later. We found him buried in a Commonwealth cemetery in Germany, where he was re-located to, while doing an internet search on his name. The family was never notified, apparently. I guess that the trail was too cold.
