Jim Carrey backlash over gun law attack

That was some seriously funny shit. He's obviously jumped right to the top of the NRA's enemies list now, but I'd say it's worth it.

Gotta disagree on that one. Compared to his other stuff, like his Black Swan parody on SNL a couple of years ago, that anti-gun one really wasn't funny at all. I'm also not sure about taking political opinion from a guy whose only other major contribution to public discourse was to engage with Jenny McCarthy in a bunch of paranoia-mongering and pseudo-scientific bullshit by telling parents not to get their kids immunized. Carrey should stick to his regular kind of humour because his attempts at legitimate satire haven't been very good thus far.

Amusing but not that funny to me. Seemed to be typical of his style of humour though. Mind you, I'm not really a big fan of his anyway and the only movie he's been in that I really liked was the Grinch.

I was quite amused. The reactions I'm seeing are amusing as well, just not quite as amusing.

Maybe because the animated version of the Grinch was always one of my favorite Xmas cartoons as a kid. The make-up job on Jim was pretty cool, as were some of the effects and the depiction of the Whos .

At least it was less cringe-worthy than his video love letter to Emma Stone.

After watching that unbelievably disturbing and basically indecent proposal, it's no wonder this twit wants the entire population unarmed, especially Emma Stone.

Mr. Carrey is free to speak his mind. I am all for free speech. However Mr. Carrey may very well find out that there is a huge price to pay when you piss off middle America. Just ask the Dixie Chicks. They voiced their opinion. They pissed off middle America,and promptly fell off the planet.Its been 10 years now since those fateful remarks by the Chicks in London. Most Americans now look back on the war in Iraq as a big mistake. However most Americans are "not ready to make nice" when it comes to the chicks. They are pretty much reduced to playing venues outside of the States these days. Every Chicks concert for 2013 is in Canada, not one show is scheduled for the States. Not one. They went from the top of the foodchain to not being able to book a gig at a small town dance hall in the States. All for voicing an opinion. Mr. Carrey should have spent some time reflecting back on his days as a starving artist doing stand up at Yuk Yuk's in Toronto, before he voiced an opinion about something so emotional in American politics. He could very well be on his way back to Yuk Yuk's in short order. Mr. Carrey is living in lefty la la land out there in California. He is completely isolated from middle America. I have a feeling he is about to be introduced. Its still middle America that reaches into their wallets to purchase a ticket, that determines if someone has a career or not.

Good that he can express himself.

But he should be ready for people to judge him for it, positively and negatively.

The Mask is a god damn masterpiece.

This wasn't riotously funny like most of Carrey's work is, but it definitely hit the high notes and I chuckled in a few spots.




Apples and oranges - I doubt this will affect Carrey very much at all.

The Dixie Chicks biggest fans were conservatives who voted for Bush, so they basically attacked their own fan base and said, 'You're idiots for voting for Dubya'. That's why they suffered the way they did. The numbers of Dixie Chick fans in NYC, LA and many other major urban centres are probably fairly low, with the bulk of them in Middle America.

Conversely, Jim Carrey (and most other Hollywood stars) have a far more diverse fan base spread all across the world, nevermind a portion of the States which is rather sparsely populated. I have no doubt that Carrey will lose a few fans over this in middle America, but movie studios probably don't really care that much about ticket sales in Boise ID, Tulsa OK or Omaha NE when compared to ticket sales in LA, NYC, Chicago and so on.
