The Conservative budget cleared its first hurdle Thursday evening as Parliament rejected a Bloc Quebecois amendment to extend EI eligibility and lend more support to the forestry and manufacturing sectors.
Interesting! The role of the opposition is to hold the government to account. Instead, Ignatieff rubberstamps the budget while describing it as a "flawed document". Where are the amendments, then Mr. Ignatieff?
Well, into the gap and holding the government to account with amendments as appropriate for the leader of the opposition is Gilles Duceppe. How about that for irony?
To make matters worse, some of his amendments such as extending EI eligibility and more support for forestry and manufacturing are liberal views and yet Ignatieff did not support them.

From the text: "The Bloc amendment vote comes four days before the House votes on Liberal additions to the budget."

The Liberal additions however are only the quarterly reports, not directly related to the content of the budget.
"uwish" said wrong, the role of the opposition is to oppose for the sake of opposing.
That is half the problem. If a bill is GOOD for the nation VOTE FOR IT. Dont' play partisan games...
Well, the Bloc was apparently not playing partisan games because they think that the budget would be BETTER for the nation (and of course, their province) with their amendments. The NDP seemed to agree since they were supporting the amendments as well. I don't see anything partisanship there. It fits with their political views.
It could be argued that the only one in the opposition playing partisan games was Ignatieff, since he supported the Conservatives against the politically "liberal" amendments presented by the Bloc.
