Saw Review

Last night, I rented SAW from the neighborhood Roger's. I gotta tell ya. It blew me away. This is one of those rare, good horror movies.

This movie was originally released October 2004, but I just watched it now, so whatever.

Here's how the story goes (from Yahoo! Movies):"A young man named Adam (LEIGH WHANNELL) wakes to find himself chained to a rusty pipe inside a decrepit subterranean chamber. Chained to the opposite side of the room is another bewildered captive, Dr. Lawrence Gordon (CARY ELWES). Between them is a dead man lying in a pool of blood, holding a .38 in his hand. Neither man knows why he has been abducted; but instructions left on a microcassette order Dr. Gordon to kill Adam within eight hours. If he fails to do so, then both men will die, and Dr. Gordon's wife, Alison (MONICA POTTER), and his daughter will be killed. Recalling a recent murder investigation by a police detective named Tapp (DANNY GLOVER), Dr. Gordon realizes he and Adam are the next victims of a psychopathic genius known only as "Jigsaw." With only a few hours left to spare, they must unravel the elaborate puzzle of their fate in the midst of mounting terror. The killer has provided them with only a few clues and two handsaws - too weak to break their steel shackles, but strong enough to cut through flesh and bone."

The storyline is great. Taut and suspenseful, it keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting more.

The acting is great as well. Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannel act their roles with well, I can't seem to find the right words, but it's good. Danny Glover is great as the obsessed police officer hunting down Jigsaw, and all the other actors perform strongly as well.

The direction is also good, especially for a first time 20 something from Melbourne.

Now, I'll caution you: This movie is not for the faint of heart. It's very gruesome and gory, which I love, but other people might find it unsettling. There's a reason it was nearly rated NC-17.

Also, this is a great technical accomplishment. It was filmed in 18 days with 1.8 million dollars.

So, all in all, Saw is an awesome movie, and if you're a fan of the genre, be sure to check it out. Evven if you're not, check it out anyway, if you're able to stomache it.

I, for one, can't wait for Saw 2, in Fall 2005.
