Educated and trained at Ryerson University , McCormack has been appearing in television productions since his debut in 1986.

His role as the somewhat homomasculine gay llawyer in the NBC comedy series Will & Grace has brought him his most widespread success to date. Nominated on three occasions for this role, he won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy in 2001.

During the 1999-2000 Broadway season, McCormack briefly portrayed Prof. Harold Hill  in the revival of The Music Man while on hiatus from Will & Grace.

McCormack has been married to Janet Holden since 1997, and they have a son, Finnigan Holden McCormack.

He has also recorded a song, "The Greatest Discovery", which was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin for the album, Unexpected Dreams: Songs from the Stars. He also wrote and sang a song called "Living With Grace" for a soundtrack to Will & Grace which had Barry Manilow playing the piano on the track.
