International court could probe possible Canadian war crimes

This is still absolutely ridiculous. The Canadian Military has never had a process to declassify its operational reports. The documents Jack Layton has demanded also contain strategic data that would not only put our forces at risk but also the civilian workers and volunteers currently working in Kandahar Provence,and the local Afghan people that has and are aiding our military and the PRTs. Jack Layton knows that and chose to put at risk all this in Afghanistan and embarrass our military personnel simply to humiliate the Prime Minister.

Yes, Amnesty International began looking into detainee torture for 2 reasons
1- the US is operating there and they have a documented and proven history of torturing POWs.
2- because of the Agreement signed by Liberal PM Paul Martin in late 2005 to turn over detainees the the Afghan Security Forces with no oversight contingencies.

Our mission there has always been different than the Americans. Our military has been fighting Al'Qaeda/Taliban forces on the ground with small patrol zones, training and mentoring ANA/ANP since 2002 as we lead the NATO force south from Kabul to Kandahar. Our military was the first line in a comprehensive plan to rebuild and protect all involved. The local tribal and village gaurds were also trained and mentored as our military left then moving forward the PRTs had security forces to continue the mentoring process.

In 2005, our military brass knew this agreement was just wrong and since they must abide by our Laws had to start the training of jailers in international law, this reduced the risk til some kind of over sight was established it became impairitive to have Canada Corrections not only lead the rebuilding and securing Saraposa Prison in Kandahar also had to include the training and mentoring of the security forces and jailers, in Afghan Law (according to their constitution), Canada Law and the rights of detainees and inaccordance with international law where it pertained to holding and upholding the rights of those held as prisoners of war. In 2006 the bill sending department of correction to Afghanistan contained the updated assignment.

The BC Civil Liberties Association could have recieved this information had they asked but turned it into a media circus from the start,the organization has always had a credibily problem because of a strong politcal bias for a civil rights group. Ambassador Colvin also contributed to the misconception by testifing to a Senate Committee that he had warned the Department of Defence of the concerns of Amnesty International because 6 countries including Canada signed the agreement and sent a letter to the PMO and to Mr. MacKay's office directly. He later testified that he was in error. This was the second time one of our ambassadors assigned to the US publically denounced our government through the military after being posted to the US.

By this time Mr. Layton in a very dispictable way turned it into media frenzy in an attempt to humiliate our military for the purpose of attacking Mr. Harper's credibility. Which was started with the thoughtless actions of the then PM Paul Martin. The Speaker of the House Milikin was a respected memeber of the house because of his dedication to Parliamentary Procedure. The fact the Government was found in contempt of Parliament initially was because they could not submit Top Secret Military Reports to Parliament, that would make them public record. With the contempt charge he order the Government to put a committee together that could have documents declassified to submit to Parliament, the NDP and Jack Layton never did sit at that table. That does show he intended to use the Canaians in Afghanistan and the Afghan people for his own political ambitions ... and that all.

It far easier to guilt a liberal democracy than it is to guilt a dictatorship (like Libya or Syria.) The ICC is simply full of lazy idiots who lack the stomach to go after the real criminals.

The problem is that the Harper government has instituted so much secrecy that no one knows whats going, we have no idea if our troops are abusing Afghans. If it takes an outside body to investigate them im all for it

I should think that we want to avoid a fiasco like the Somalia Scandal when Canadian soldiers tortured a man to death. The conservatives don't believe in transparency or accountability to the public regardless of what they say.

Typical of the Canadian left in that the only time they want to see someone hang is when their ire is directly aimed at Canadian soldiers or police. And if they can hop on the lynch mob bandwagon that's being conducted by a foreigner then it's even more of a bonus for them. Typically disgusting of them as per their usual dance routine.
