The Halifax Regional School Board gave its blessing Wednesday to the province's new national anthem policy to make sure students either hear or sing O Canada every day.
Two board members said they've received angry emails on the subject — some supporti
I sang the national anthem every day when I went to school in Halifax. Back then nobody whined about "religious freedom". We were all proud to be Canadian.
To my knowledge not once was there a complaint about it.

Same as when I was in elementary in Winnipeg, We also said the lords prayer (gasp in public school) And listened to God Save The Queen at the end of every day. No complaints that I ever heard.

Ha, if only you all knew how true that is, lol All kidding aside, I gotta say, it's Canada, that's the anthem and belt it out whenever you can
I liked singing the songs but a lot of kids just thought it was silly and mouthed the words. When they were disciplined it was harder to take the strap seriously for mocking god save the queen and her fascist regime then it was for making fun of the then very young national anthem and flag. Our anthem went through so many revisions it seemed they were changing the song every semester so it didn't have the same amount of entrenchment as the other songs. We remembered O'Canada as our song whereas the gods prayer and god save the queen really were not as they did not truly resonate with everyone. In fact God save the queen seemed to be an insult for the kids from Preston and but O'Canada held a promise of something better. Turning that song into the same ritual as those other songs just doesn't feel right. It should be taught but it should be a song sung of free will and not become a silly ritual.

My point exactly. I should be special. You don't start your workday with it either, every single day. You start a Hockey game with it (THAT is special) or celebrate a win...

It is only ritualistic at sports events. I was recently at the US Tennis Open which always starts the day with the Star Spangled Banner - some people remained seated which was pretty courageous in New York City the day before the anniversary of 9/11.
When I was a kid it the line "God keep outr land" was actually "O Canada." The God thing was not part of heritage, it was put in their by religous conservatives. Indoctrination 101, I guess.
anyways I try to mix it up a bit by singing "Satan keep our land..." o0r "FSm keep our land..." I'm all about religious equality!
Although I do not agree with singing (or hearing) the Anthem daily, isn't this a bit far fetched?

School is an official event. Sports are not.

Although I do not agree with singing (or hearing) the Anthem daily,
I would not want to hear the Netherlands anthem either, unless I was a citizen
